6 Things I Learned after Consistently Going to the Gym for 6 Months

I’ve always been the skinny guy, and this year I decided to step out of my comfort zone and make a change.

1. Consistency

Building a habit is hard and requires commitment.

When starting off, it was tough to break my usual routine.

I followed the two-day rule of never missing two days in a row, allowing me to slowly build up going to the gym as part of my routine.

2. Taking breaks

Everyone preaches about going hard all the time, but for me, I took breaks so my body could heal.

Listen to your body and know when it needs rest.

Don’t feel guilty about taking a day off, but don’t let the breaks run on too long.

3. Staying committed

When starting something new, it takes months or years to see results.

I didn’t start seeing results for months, but I didn’t let that get to me.

Remember why you started, and don’t get discouraged. Nothing happens overnight.

4. Keep a log

Keeping track of your progression is important.

It lets you know how you’re improving and where you might be lacking, as well as holding yourself accountable.

Write (or type) down each workout you do so you can know your progression.

5. Don’t overexert yourself

Know how much you can handle.

Don’t be an ego lifter, and try lifting more than you can handle to show off to people who most likely don’t care.

Lift what you can handle with good form so you can succeed and achieve long-term results.

6. Have specific goals

Just like everything, you need to have goals for what you want to accomplish.

Be specific with your goals, or else you’ll be less likely to achieve them.

Whether your goal is to lose 10lbs, or deadlift 200lbs, write down what you want to achieve.

Exercising is something I’ve added to my routine, and it has made me happier and more confident.

I am no expert and still very new to lifting, but I wanted to share my experience and learnings to maybe help someone who is looking to start exercising.
