They are with you most of the time if you are not careful. Lurking in the shadows of your mind.
Let me introduce them:
Meet: Should have Would have Could have
My degen friend, you didn’t have to be around NFTs for long to meet them. The question is, what do you do about them because they are not going away, that’s for sure.
They raise your heart rate, cause panic, and stop you from sleeping. What do they give you in return?
– Regret – FOMO – Fear – Turning an otherwise great experience sour
Now, I don’t know about you, but this is not good.
If you want to be able to stick around this space in relatively good health, learning to deal with these is inevitable.
Thankfully, they are not impossible to handle.
The way I think about them is little animals that need some training. They stick around because they have your best interest in mind, but they don’t know when to stop.
Here’s a model action plan loosely based on Dr. Russ Harris’ ACT principles — he often talks about these in the Happiness trap and The reality slap. NFA, DYOR
Acknowledge
Whatever you do, work towards developing a system that helps you recognize when the nasty 3 goblins appear.
This could vary: you can track your mood and changes.
You can be more specific and pay attention to your body’s signals: HRV, tension, aches, and pains.
Pro tip: Practice getting to know your mind — practices such as different types of meditation could be quite helpful
Open
I know this sounds weird, but since these goblins are unlikely to go away, you might as well give them a bit of space.
– Note what they are trying to warn your about – Ground yourself and ask yourself what you need
Pro tip: Name all the emotions that surfaced during this stage
Take Action/Accept
The following two steps are great, but this is the most important. If you follow the above two, you have a good chance of being guided by your values and needs when deciding what action to take.
Define taking action:
Sometimes this means inaction, other times, it means ramping up the speed.
Put this into context:
If you are watching a project, make some moves.
FOMO appears, and you think, “I should have bought more yesterday.”
Before you take action:
– Acknowledge what’s happening. What is your mind focusing on?
– Open up to the discomfort this experience brings and ask yourself, “what do I need right now.”
– Select an option based on the above and take action: this might mean in the above situation, you take a moment to clear your head and clarify what your intentions are with the project: degen plays, short-term hold, mid-, long term hold. Or abandon it completely.
When you are stressed and the 3 goblins are around, you are unlikely to be able to make logical decisions — and we both know this space needs a lot more logic these days.
This is by no means medical advice. This is just a guide, and this process is distilled from years of practice, but there is no guarantee this will work.
If anything, this is an opportunity to approach this with a bit more knowledge and conscious decision-making.
I wish you well, degen fren.
